Free Journals and Texts from the WHO- HINARI

 
HINARI Programme set up by WHO together with major publishers, enables developing countries to gain access to one of the world’s largest collections of biomedical and health literature. Up to 11,400 journals (in 30 different languages), up to 18,500 e-books, up to 70 other information resources are now available to health institutions in more than 100 countries, areas and territories benefiting many thousands of health workers and researchers, and in turn, contributing to improve world health.

South African Clinical Training Fellowship in Pain Management

 
Interested candidates from developing African countries are invited to apply for a THREE (3) month clinical training program in Pain Management to be run in the Republic of South Africa.

The 29th Société d’Anesthésie et de la Réanimation D’Afrique Noire Francophone Congress (SARANF) takes place in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, from 20-22 November 2013. The 32nd Confederation of Latin American Societies of Anaesthesiologists (CLASA) takes place in
Asunción from 30 September ‐ 3 October 2013. Baxter Healthcare Ltd has generously decided to

The 10th Pan Arab Congress of Anesthesia Intensive Care and Pain Management takes place in Beirut, Lebanon from 12‐15 September 2013. Applications open for new Paediatric Anaesthesia Fellowship in Nairobi

 
The University of Nairobi is offering a new Paediatric Anaesthesia Fellowship for Central and East African anaesthesiologists, starting September 2013.

Goodbye and Hello

 
Ruth Hooper retires
At the end of April, the WFSA said a final farewell to Ruth Hooper, who had been the Administrative Coordinator of the WFSA since 2001.
She has been replaced by Renée Blij who has been working alongside Ruth, learning the ropes since February this year.

WFSA RESEARCH GRANTS 2013

 
This year the WFSA Scientific Committee will continue for the third year a programme of research scholarships. These grants will be provided to young researchers from less affluent countries to help them to travel to a foreign country to study and learn in a research programme. The recipient will have to develop a research project in a Department or a Laboratory of Anaesthesiology for a period of six months to one year, with a final goal of publishing an original paper in an indexed journal. This could form part of an advanced diploma or a PhD thesis.

Dr. Angela Enright receives ASA Nicholas Green Award

 
Dr. Angela Enright, the immediate Past President of the WFSA, has been honoured by the American Society of Anaesthesiologists with the Nicholas Greene Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Contribution.
Dr Enright has also been honoured by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland who awarded her Honorary Membership of the AAGBI.

Palestine Anesthesia Teaching Mission: Call for Volunteers for 2013

 
We are seeking volunteers for the above mission for the months of March, April and May 2013. Anesthesiologists with a special interest in residency training and education are desirable. Operating room teaching takes place in three hospitals-Makkased Hospital in East Jerusalem, Rafidia Hospital in Nablus and Al-Ahli Hospital in Hebron and formal classroom teaching at the Ramallah Medical Complex in Ramallah each Saturday morning. Palestine Anesthesia Teaching Mission (PATM) Update 2012/13

 
PATM is an important collaboration between the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF) and the WFSA. The mission is making excellent progress training young Palestinian anaesthesiologists.

Essential Pain Management (EPM) Introduced to Latin America

 
The WFSA recently supported a series of Essential Pain Management courses in Honduras. EPM is a basic pain management course which provides a system for managing pain of all types.
This was the first time that EPM has been taught in Spanish and the first time the course has been taught in the Latin American region. 29 instructors from seven countries were trained and there are plans to run more courses in the region.

Kybele´s project is a Gates Grant Finalist

 
The WFSA has been informed that Kybele, an not for profit organisation trying to improve safety in childbirth around the world, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Saving lives at birth: a grand challenge for development’ competition.

The WFSA works in four-year cycles, each beginning and ending with a World Congress of Anaesthesiologists so this is always a good time to look back and review our activities. The Management Group, the Executive and all of our Committees have been busy and I believe we have accomplished a great deal. I would like to highlight some of the most notable achievements.
