Resuscitation Committee Report 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Committee Members:

  • Dr Guillermo Navarro (Argentina)
  • Dr M O Ababneh (Jordan)
  • Prof Claude Martin (France)
  • Prof Grace Herbosa (Vice Chairperson) (Philippines)
  • Prof BJS (Johan) Diedericks (Chairman) (South Africa)

The committee made slow progress, but some projects did move forward. Communication with individual members is difficult, but eventually all members did respond to E-mail communication. Two meetings between the chairperson and Dr. M O Ababneh took place where priorities for the Middle East area were discussed. Dr Grace Herbosa also had discussions with Dr Enright and Dr Nuevo on intensive care issues.

Though the previous committee requested that intensive care be dropped from the committee job description that was not done before new members were appointed - thus some members are dedicated intensivists. However it is now accepted that in future the committee will have a narrower scope of work which will exclude trauma and intensive care. For the time being, some intensive care initiatives will be continued.

Dr. M O Ababneh started a resuscitation training programme with own resources in Amman, but cannot keep up with the demand. He needs assistance by way of additional equipment, travel expenses and more people to assist with training requests in Jordan and the surrounding countries.

Prof Grace Herbosa will pursue an initiative to create simple training modules and standardised guidelines for use by units with limited resources. In essence modules will be prepared on critical care issues and how to recognize and treat using simple surrogate monitoring parameters as well as mentioning the state of the art methods. She will be assisted by members in the committee that have an interest in Critical Care. She is in the process of defining what modules to develop.

The Africa Resuscitation training pilot made some progress. Sponsors disappeared in the current economic climate, but trainers have been identified and material developed for use. The pilot hospitals still have to be identified. Hopefully the first visits will be done late 2009 or early 2010.

Prof BJS Diedericks
Chairman: Subspecialty Committee for Resuscitation.
