Manpower Working Party Report 2009 PDF Print E-mail
The Manpower Taskforce was set up at the time of the 2004 WCA in Paris. It was given the task of finding the number of anaesthesia providers in the world, whether they were a physician or not and to document what type of training they had. The original plan was to do this over four years and report at the next WCA in Cape Town and then stop. The Taskforce did this and at the associated executive meeting it was decided that the Task Force should continue as an ongoing Working Party.

Dr Michiaka Yamakage from Japan has subsequently joined the original members.

Members

  • Kempthorne, Dr Peter, Chairman - New Zealand
  • Cottrell, Dr James - United States
  • Galindo, Dr Manuel  - Colombia
  • Janecskó, Dr Maria - Hungary
  • Lundgren-Steele, Dr Christina - South Africa
  • Mellin-Olsen, Dr Jannicke - Norway
  • Salama, Dr Ali A - Sudan (Dr Salama sadly died during his time on the Taskforce)
  • Tian, Dr Ming - China
  • Wilson, Dr Iain H - United Kingdom
  • Yamakage, Dr Michiaka - Japan

Some members of the original Taskforce worked extremely hard and produced a fine result that was presented in Cape Town. This managed to document 112 countries, and the anaesthesia for 84% of the world population. There were 341,080 providers of anaesthesia of whom 4,485 were non-physicians working alone.
Since then the Working Party has not been active.

The next task is to recontact each of the people who kindly provided the original information and ask for this to be updated. Hopefully this will provide some trend information that will be useful. The original information was just a snapshot and the addition of trend will add another dimension.

There have been several requests for information from the Working Party over the last 18 months. It is clear that this information needs to be published in a Journal so that all can have access to it. This is another reason that the information from each country should be updated so that when it is published the information is as current as possible.

P M Kempthorne
Chairman of the Manpower Working Party.
